Introduction to aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a natural therapy practising the use of essential oils to maintain and promote physical, psychological, and spiritual well being. It offers a valuable alternative to chemical-based medication.

The most effective way to use essential oils is by inhalation or external application. Unlike chemical drugs, the fantastic part of using essential oils is that they enter and leave our body with great efficiency, leaving no toxins behind, and therefore, cause no side effects.

The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans have discovered that oils taken direct from plant had immense power on our state of health – both body and mind. However the term Aromatherapy was first coined by a French chemist, Réné-Maurice Gattefosse in 1920s. He discovered and was amazed by the healing properties of lavender oil when he applied it to a burn on his hand caused by an explosion in his laboratory. He then started to study and researching the healing properties of essential oils.

Essential oils are powerful healing agents from plants. Essential oils aren’t oily at all but are volatile (easily evaporated) substances contains in glands, sacs and veins of different plant parts.

  • Flowering tops (Lavender)
  • Leaves (Eucalyptus)
  • Peel of fruit (Bergamot)
  • Root (Vetivert)
  • Seed (Cardamom)
  • Buds (Clove)
  • Bark resin (Frankincense)
  • Berries (Juniper Berry)

That’s no point in purchasing synthetic oils, simply because they do not possess the same therapeutic healing qualities when compare with natural essence and might even produce adverse effects. Essential oils are highly concentrated, one drop of essential oil equals about thirty cups of herbal tea in terms of concentration, thus must be diluted before skin application.
